No it doesn’t.
On a D50 the only way the viewfinder would be black is if you

A. Have lens Cap on
B. The mirror is broken/dislodged or locked up.

The D50 is an optical viewfinder so I wouldn't have thought that should happen. You haven't left the lens cap on have you? Chris

It shouldn’t as far as I know. It is a DSLR. The viewfinder is just a reflection from the mirror "looking" through the lens. It should make no difference if the camera is on or off or even has a battery in it. The view is a simple physical function of looking through the lens. I have never had an SLR that you could not see through the viewfinder and lens… makes no difference if it is powered up or not, or if a battery is in it.

Maybe a Nikon expert can say why, but this is the first time I have ever heard of such a thing. I don’t understand how any electronics would be stopping the view. If the camera was an EVF, yes, it must be powered, but the D50 is not an EVF (electronic view finder SLR "like") camera.

Sorry, I would like to know the answer to this myself.

Obviously the view finder on your Nikon requires power to operate.
