Why Is It When The Camera Battery Is Removed, The Viewfinder Turns Black.?
Posted by admin | Under Nikon D50 Battery Monday Mar 8, 2010I just noticed this, but this doesn’t happen on my N8008s, but it does on my Nikon D50.
No, the lens cap is off. The viewfinder turns gray, almost as if you’d hit the DOF preview when the lens is set to f22. But my D50 does not have DOF preview.
The same thing also happens with the Pentax K100D.
The viewfinder must be electronic
The viewfinder must be electronic

Obviously the view finder on your Nikon requires power to operate.

It shouldn’t as far as I know. It is a DSLR. The viewfinder is just a reflection from the mirror "looking" through the lens. It should make no difference if the camera is on or off or even has a battery in it. The view is a simple physical function of looking through the lens. I have never had an SLR that you could not see through the viewfinder and lens… makes no difference if it is powered up or not, or if a battery is in it.
Maybe a Nikon expert can say why, but this is the first time I have ever heard of such a thing. I don’t understand how any electronics would be stopping the view. If the camera was an EVF, yes, it must be powered, but the D50 is not an EVF (electronic view finder SLR "like") camera.
Sorry, I would like to know the answer to this myself.

EDIT
To the answer given by "asdfghjk…" … learn something before you get on here and show your ignorance. We are talking about an SLR… not your goofy point and shoot.

The D50 is an optical viewfinder so I wouldn’t have thought that should happen. You haven’t left the lens cap on have you?

because you turned the camera off. deedeedee. wow.
can you say battery powered?

No it doesn’t.
On a D50 the only way the viewfinder would be black is if you
A. Have lens Cap on
B. The mirror is broken/dislodged or locked up.

This has been proved to cause a shortage of electrons leading to darkness in the devices dependent on same.
