I was considering a Nikon SB 600 flash unit, but I was wanting to know what powersource does it use? Does the unit use the camera’s battery, or its own source? About how many shots could I expect at full to half power? I’d be using it on a D50, if that helps at all. Thanks.
It’s all right where you would expect:

Posted by admin | Under Nikon D50 Battery Sunday May 30, 2010Will the nikon d5000 be compatible with older lenses?
Posted by admin | Under Nikon D50 Lenses Sunday May 30, 2010I have a d50 at the moment and it is compatible with older and newer lenses. I was wondering if the d5000 is the same way? Would I be able to use the lenses I use for my d50 for the nikon d5000? Thanks!
Technically yes… Practically all Nikon lenses will mount to the D5000. And as long as they have electrical contacts you can use the light meter (same as the D50).
HOWEVER, starting with the D40, Nikon decided to remove their autofocus motor from their entry level bodies. This continued with the D40x, D60, and remains true for the D3000 and D5000. What this unfortunately means is that the older body driven "AF" lenses are restricted to manual focus when used on this body. Only lenses with a dedicated motor built in… AF-I or AF-S, or a third party equivalent… will actually autofocus.
Does this sound like a good/reasonable camera?
Posted by admin | Under Nikon D50 Accessories Sunday May 30, 2010The camera I found online is a Nikon D50 6.1 Megapixel w/ 70-300 mm lens + accessories. Price- 275$ slightly used.

That is the review.
Do you think that it’ll be a good camera for close ups, nature and such?
You are reminded of the fact that the Nikon D50 does not have the following "features":
1. No video movie capability with sound;
2. No built-in body image stabilization;
3. Limited burst speed range; usually around 3 fps; and
4. It’s used.
So to answer the question: Is there a better choice?" Here’s my "yes" recommendation:
If you are really on a budget and want the best quality for the money, check out the P&S Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 which has more features than most pro DSLRs that require auxiliary lenses not even equal to the single initial full-range lense that comes with the FZ28. It is reviewed at:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2008_reviews/panasonic_fz28.html
It just came out on November 4, 2008.
It’s an all-in-one 10.1 megapixel DSLR camera which includes (i) built-in image stabilization; (ii) HDTV quality video [Quicktime]; (iii) a 18x zoom [27 - 486 mm (35mm equiv.)] "Leica" lense for nature photography; (iv) up to 0.39 inch macro option; (v) up to 6400 ASA; (vi) takes up to 380 pictures per 120 min. battery charge; (vii) has a "burst speed" of 13 fps; and sells new for $270 at amazon.com.
Here’s an actual handheld picture of the moon:

Good luck!
Are the lenses used with a Nikon D50 compatible with the D90 body?
Posted by admin | Under Nikon D50 Sunday May 30, 2010Forgive my ignorance, I’m a complete camera numpty. I’m considering buying a better camera body as a surprise for someone who has a D50. Would all of his gadgets etc work on the newer model?
In general, yes! Although some minor accessories may not be compatible. I don’t think that the remote shutter release, for example, will work. However, the lenses and the flashes WILL work, and those are the most important things, right?
would a vivitar lens #22449876 fit a nikon d50 camera?
Posted by admin | Under Nikon D50 Camera Sunday May 30, 2010I have a nikon d50 camera and I need to know if a vivitar lens serial# 22449876 will fit on this camera
Maybe. And only sort of, if the maybe condition is satisfied.
Vivitar no longer sells 3rd party lenses. They used to sell lenses for the various manual focus cameras from the 1970s and 80s. They actually never _made_ anything, but they marketed some great products from manufacturers like Kiron as their "Series 1" lenses.
If it’s for Nikon (there’s the if condition), it will mount on your DSLR and function in manual focus mode with limited capability. It might also be for Canon, Minolta, etc. Here’s what a Nikon mount looks like:
http://www.camerarepair.com/Used-Cameras/Nikon-MF-SLR-C3/Lenses-C9/28mm-f2.0-Nikkor-P68/Pics/Rear-I1466/xlarge.jpg
(notice the little arm on the right and the prong a bit above)
__ if it looks exactly like this on the mount, that’s what it is __
here’s an AF with some legacy concerns exhibited (from the 90s):
http://www.camerarepair.com/Used-Cameras/Nikon-AF-SLR-C2/Lenses-C8/105mm-F2.8D-AF-Micro-Macro-Nikkor-P375/Pics/I5274/xlarge.jpg
(note those electronic contacts)
Newer AF lenses do not have anything other than those electronic contacts. And newer cameras are designed for those contacts. Their non-pro newer camera bodies don’t have the legacy stuff for anything else, so …
Sort of, because it won’t fully couple. You’ll have to fiddle with lots of dials, but it will work with some care. Some higher-end Nikons include some extra legacy stuff to make their older lenses work. They phased it out on all the others many years ago in exchange for the more electronic system.
Where can I get a cheap Nikon D digital camera? Some thing between Free-$500?.?
Posted by admin | Under Camera D50 Digital Nikon Sunday May 30, 2010d50 d200 d300 d80
You can get a Nikon D40, D50, or D70/D70s with a lens for no more than $500.
The Nikon D40 kit, as mentioned above, is available new below your budget (around $450 if shipped within the US). The D50, D70, and D70s bodies (used) can be found on Craigslist or eBay for around $350. If you’re lucky it’ll come with a lens too. If not, adding a new 18-55mm kit lens will cost no more than $120.
Camera Help?
Posted by admin | Under Camera D50 Digital Nikon SLR Sunday May 30, 2010I want a really good camera, or one that takes fairly good pictures. Im looking into the Nikon D50 but im a little skeptical here, http://www.shopping.com/xPC-Nikon_D50_Digital_SLR_with_28_90mm_F_3_3_5_6_Lens , now the price is extremely cheap so im not sure if its a rip off. Anyone know? Or a good camera that isn’t so expensive?
SCAM!
That link is only there to be counted by the advertiser for payment from the sellers of a BOOK, and DOES NOT lead to a D50 camera, but some crap book about cameras. The link’s only there to make you click on it!
SCAM!
Aside from that rant, yes, the D50 is a good camera. If I could buy them for the $30 or so advertised by that scam link, I’d take two hundred of them!
Is the Nikon D50 a good value entry level SLR? Are there better cameras for similar money?
Posted by admin | Under SLR Nikon D50 Sunday May 30, 2010
Like the others have said, the D50 is a great camera and excellent value for money. For about the same price, you can get the Pentax K100D and K110D, or the Olympus E500. I prefer the Nikon D50 out of that group for the following reasons:
* It’s an equal or better all-around camera
* You have a much wider selection of lenses
* You have a much better upgrade path (lenses, bodies, and accessories)
—
For about $100 more than a D50, you can get a Nikon D70s or a Canon 350D. The prices of these two models have been severely reduced since the recent announcement of replacement models (the Nikon D80 for $1000, and the Canon 400D for $800). Due to these price cuts, the D70s and the 350D are currently better value for money than a D50… but it’s only worth spending the $100 extra if you need the added features that those models offer. If you don’t need those extra features, by all means stick with the D50!

Whatever camera you get, you’ll also have to chose a lens. The kit-lens with the D50 is the 18-55mm zoom, also by Nikon. This is a budget model, and I’ve heard a few complaints about it.
If you can spare the extra cash, please consider the Nikon 18-70mm instead. For about $150 more than the 18-55mm, this lens gives you extra reach and noticibly better image quality.

Time Lapse
Posted by admin | Under Nikon D50 Battery Sunday May 30, 2010
My first time lapse. It was supposed to go on for a total of 6 hours, but my camera battery died 3 hours in. I used a Nikon D50 with Camera Control Pro 2 connected to my laptop.
