No. Just insert the regular Nikon battery into the camera and you're good to go.

It's an extra battery compartment that you attach to the base of the camera (it slides into the normal battery slot, and you attach it into the tripod mount.)
The grip lets you add more batteries, so you can go longer between recharging.
It also adds more weight and volume to the camera, which some people like to have for better stability and grip.
And finally, it has it's own shutter button, which you can easily reach when you shoot in portrait mode (so you don't have to cramp you right hand).
